On the Sacred Rock

What you will see

The great monuments you know today were built in the second half of the 5th century BC, under the building programme launched by Pericles.

I

Propylaea

The monumental gateway to the Sacred Rock. The hill is steep on every side except the west, so this has always been the way in.

II

Parthenon

Designed by Iktinos with Callicrates, with sculptures by Phidias. It once housed the colossal gold-and-ivory statue of Athena.

III

Erechtheion

Famous for the Porch of the Maidens, the Caryatids. The Panathenaic procession, a festival as popular as the Olympic Games, ended here.

IV

Temple of Athena Nike

A small, elegant temple on the bastion beside the entrance, dedicated to Athena as goddess of victory.
